Hi Paula,
Here are some pictures of "Shelby" (formerly multicolored collar female). They show her entering her new home the first day, her in the back seat of the car on her first visit to the vet, her first boat ride, then she's checking out her favorite website, her tired out after a long day at play, her just looking up at daddy, and finally having fun with some friends.
I want to thank you again for helping with some valuable training tools last week when I called you all upset that I couldn't handle her and we may be selling her.
Her biting our legs and hands was getting out of hand and her urnating and pooping in the house was showing us we were doing something wrong even though I felt she was not "getting it".
You said to put the leash on her at all times in the house and give a side tug when she started to bite. It worked! And then I became "Alpha". It also worked with the "accidents". you said when she wants to "go" in the house, she will take off and find a spot, which she was doing when I wasn't watching her. With her on the leash, I know when she wants to go away from me, so I then take her out and she does her business.
I am also taking her food away from her when she stops eating and she doesn't get fed again until next time. This keeps her from having to go at all hours of the day.
Please share this information with others who may be becoming frustrated with the puppy stage.
It really helped and Shelby will be going no where but here at her home with us.
Thanks again,
Susan, Chuck and Shelby

Below>"Shelby Update"

Hi Paula,
Shelby is getting so big. She weighs around 30 pounds now and she has her diploma from Puppy Training. The next course is Basic Obedience which will start in October. She has come a long way. We are still working on the biting, but everyone we talk to says it will stop in time. She still has her puppy teeth. But she has learned a lot and she is really smart. We have to keep her mind occupied. We got her in the lake swimming during the hot days and she loves it. We throw a wood out for her and she swims in and retrieves it. She can sit,lay down give her paw, stays (somewhat-still working on it), will "leave it" for objects if you have a treat for her. If we tell her to find her ball, she will look until she finds it even if it is on another floor.
I will try to get some better pictures, maybe if I can get her to "stay" long enough. She is fast.
Will keep in touch.

Hi
Sorry to be such a bragging new mom but this pup blows me away This AM both ears are up again & I got a few decent photos I took him to swim in lake & he loved it Today we also hiked in State park he is so very smart I finally made headway in him tugging on lead It took Bitter Apple plus cayenne pepper!
He gets more handsome each day he weighs about 31 1/2 pounds & eats Fromm with some yogurt and or cottage cheese I do not anything else at this point as he tends to get looser stools so I will wait a while
My student intern is gone so I have the dogs on my own Venner just gets in his crate & behaves like a pro This week we will start "find The Duck" game & introduce the Dremel for his nails

"Venner" Update October 26th 2009!!!!!
Hi
Just a quick update Venner weighs almost 60 pounds at 5 months Yikes! Good thing I started his training as soon as he got home he gets better looking each day people always comment on his "gorgeous" looks he goes to the Kingston dog park 4-5 times a week and has developed a good rapport with other dogs I am so glad I found a place for him to really run & play and at the same time learn to interact appropriately with other dogs.
I do have to use my old stand by, lemon juice when he still tries to play tug with the lead while we are walking or "sasses" me with his bark I have used this method for years I just buy one of the plastic lemon juice fake lemons It is small easy to carry non toxic and they hate the taste if the earn is!
He loves people and is a favorite at work where everyone is amazed at his size He is well proportioned, just big!
I finally settled on his name & am registering him this week It is:"Venner Sammen Af Ryanhaus which means" friends together of Ryanhaus" in Danish
He has his adult teeth, no more teething he handled it well and loves ice cubes
his training continues. his basic obedience is good he has very good sit & down stays and is just starting to begin to play the games that will lead to his job as rehab dog he is learning how to visit politely and is very bright I will keep you posted

Update on "Venner" Nov. 1st 2009
Hi
I took a few photos today It is hard as I try pose him then click and that delay in the camera often causes me to miss an opportunity!
he got his rabies shot yesterday & officially weighs 61 pounds! Is this average for his lines or is he bigger than most?
he is so good at the dog park now- is at the point where if another dog tries to get fresh ( usually a small ankle biter) he uses calming signals and tries to deflect the advanses- pretty good for his age, I think
No matter where we go I get comments on his good looks He is a head turner for sure! I am going to try to get photos at work in next few weeks
Linda

Very recent update on "Venner" November 8th 2009
Hi
I hope I am not overwhelming you with all these e mails but this one is very exciting One of our patients at the rehab had not been participating in his therapies, had a lot of pain complaints and issues of a patient who has had a serious brain injury. It was decided to try using the dogs in his treatment sessions Thinking that "Venner" was still too young, I had the man work with my Lab, "Decker" The patient did participate marginally, but without much enthusiasm. Then just to introduce them, I brought Venner Out of his crate on a Flexilead and we had the patient throw a toy. Although there were 3 persons sitting down, 2 of whom Venner knows and plays with, he went & got the toy and brought it right to the patient. First of all- he is still at that age where he seldom.
brings toys right back, even to me. Also... why did he choose to bring it to the patient and I mean right to his hand! We did this 2-3 times and then it was time for the sessions to be over The patient smiled and even spoke to Venner
But wait.... it gets better! Yesterday the same patient came back to our area to try the dogs again in OT This time I took my other Lab out & began using her to go get toys Venner was having none of that & put up a ruckus in his crate At that point I usually correct him & we can continue with the session but it was obvious Venner remembered the man as someone who he had fun with and was overjoyed when I brought him out to play & put the Lab back This patient played with Venner for 30 minutes, smiled, spoke to Venner & us, and only asked once when the time would be up. He also had no pain complaints. Upon leaving he gave Venner a big good bye, smile and laugh His doctor was walking by & after the patent left, rushed in ,amazed that Venner was already having such an impact as he found it hard to believe he had heard the man laughing!
So... I guess Venner does have that certain "it" that I look for-- that sense of knowing who needs him and at 5 1/2 months continues to amaze me and the staff at Northeast Rehab!
Proud Owner,Linda
Update on "Venner" February 6th 2010
Hi
Just an update on Venner now that he is 8 1/2 months. He is growing into his body and is 92 pounds now. he is a favorite at the rehab and he is starting his exercises getting him ready for his more formal training to work
We play" find the duck" ( rubber!)and it is hidden in all the places he will have to retrieve objects from- drawers, tables, basket, etc he loves to work and the newest addition is his back pack It is just a training pack but he loves to wear it & looks proud as he struts down the hall.
He still a goofy teen and I have to work all the time on his greeting people politely He would love to jump on everyone but is finally learning the fine art of impulse control! I am just so pleased he loves everyone and coming to work is such good socialization. He is going through the predictable fear period of 8 months and is not thrilled with the dark so I make sure our walks are mostly in the day We walk 2-4 miles a day so having him is the best thing that has happened for my health!
He has a huge vocabulary and is very bright I plan to begin his more formal training by a year and hope he can do some basic sessions by 18 months I never like to push a dog but he loves anything I give him to do I will keep you posted Thanks again for such a nice dog
Linda
PS taking the photos was difficult as he wants to be at my side all the time I finally lucked out as a bird distracted him!
Below Update on "Riley" Pictures coming soon:
Hi Paula, Sorry I took so long to update you. Riley has been such
a joy to have. He is very smart and is excellent around adults, kids,
and all kinds of animals. He is being a typical puppy by biting
anything he can get his mouth around. He is getting better with the
biting. He knows when he bites to hard and he knows when he does
something wrong. He loves his kennel. He and the cats are adjusting
slowly but surely. He loves to eat ice cubes. He loves to chase
tennis balls and sticks. He also loves to swim. We have had him in a
lake and the ocean. We have gotten so many compliments on Riley. If
he wasn't my dog, I would say he is a great looking dog. i will send
you pictures by email so you can put them on your website Sam/Xander.
Riley was very therapeutic during a death in the family. He brought
joy to so many people during this sad time. It was a blessing to get
him when we did. My step father who passed away, got to see Riley
two days before he passed. He had been sick for a while and when he
saw Riley come into the room his smile was ear to ear. He loves
German Shepherds and Riley brought joy to him the short time he knew
him. I highly recommend you to everyone I speak with. Say hi to Theo
and Sam for me. Thank You for this great German Shepherd! Talk to
you soon.
Bryan

Update on "Riley"!!!
Hi Paula:
I had hoped to see you at Mike Citro's Kennel a few weeks
back, but I couldn't make it that day. He is an excellent trainer
and I am so happy I have taken Riley there for training. I can't say
enough good things about you and your dogs. They are a great breed
with a great breeder. Mike is also very impressed with your dogs,
especially Riley! Riley has trained very well and is making very good
progress. I will keep sending you photos and can not thank you enough
for Riley. Have a great holiday season!
Thank You
Sara and Bryan

Below is "Gunner" what a handsome boy, he lives with the Troy family!!!
This is what they have to say.....
Hi Paula,
My name is Kristen Troy, you met my father and two sisters in July when we bought one of your male puppies (Gunner). I just wanted to send you some pictures and give you an update on how Gunner is doing. We love him so much! He has a GREAT temperament and is very friendly with other dogs and children. He loves to be with his family and follows us everywhere around the house. He's particularly taken to my Dad, which is great since they are the only two boys in the house! We get stopped all the time walking him because everyone thinks he is so handsome. We've taken him to Manchester a few times to play with his brother Maximus. His last vet appointment was on 9/2 and he weighs 31lbs. He's very muscular and athletic already, the vet was very impressed!
-Kristen

These beautiful girls "Ava & Ruxi" live with John & Michele in Marshfield Ma.
They are also playing with their solid black half brother "Gunny" a Bonnie/Xander pup!

Hi Paula!
I just wanted to give you an update on Maximus and how he's doing! He's right around 100 pounds of solid bone and muscle. I'm feeding him Fromm Adult dog food twice a day still, and he loves getting table scraps from the boys and Sean! He's still so friendly to everyone, and I still get stopped by people because of how handsome he is! I really love having Maximus here for a lot of reasons, but I especially feel safe when Sean travels. He doesn't seem to bark much when Sean is here, but he definitely lets his presence known when my husband is away. He loves to go out for his walks, and take in all the scents along the way. I think he's especially attached to my husband, and visa versa, although he loves everybody in the house and the many friends who enter as well.
I'm getting him groomed every other month to cut down on shedding which definitely helps, and his coat is very healthy. She actually commented on how stocky he is and said he looks like a "German" German Shepherd, and I told her that's exactly what he is! She said he's fantastic and loves to groom him! He's great with all the kids that come in and out of the house too! We feel so lucky to have gotten him from you, and I highly recommend you to anyone who is interested in getting a German Shepherd. Thank you, Paula, and I'll keep you updated!!
The Daly Family
Paula,
I will keep you updated when Sasha gets back from training. Here are some pictures taken when she was 5 months old. As you can see she is beautiful. We get lots of compliments on her,
Thanks Kara
Hi Paula,
Hope all is going well for you and the family. Layka is doing real well with my family. I entered her in a fun puppy parade last month. It was a lot of fun and she did great with all the people and dogs aroung here. She just completed her first puppy classes and did real well. She is very easy to train, due to her real strong food drive. I plan to get a companion dog title on her. My daughter and wife take her for walks everyday and I take her in the evening time for some light training.
Thanks so much,
Ernie V

Below is Ernie picking up Layka and taking the time to pose
with Layka's sister "Tessie Von Ryan" and mom Sam!
